Energy storage

The Swedish and European electricity systems are undergoing major changes. This has opened up a market for energy storage in a way that was not previously possible, as a profitable alternative that strengthens the Swedish power grid. Over the years, we have installed several different energy storage solutions.

Energy storage +1MW

Large-scale batteries, known as BESS (Battery Energy Storage Systems), consist of container-sized units. These systems can complement existing electricity production from solar and wind power but also function perfectly well as standalone units.

Energy storage 50-600 kW

Our energy storage facilities, ranging in size from 50 to 600 MW, are designed to generate multiple streams simultaneously. They can be used independently or integrated with existing production facilities, grid connections, or large electricity users.

In addition to participating in frequency markets, the solution enables electricity arbitrage, peak shaving, and optimization of power output. Charging and discharging are performed automatically via advanced controls and measurement, where the battery is optimized based on electricity prices, grid conditions, and your business priorities.

Why you should invest in energy storage

Investing in energy storage offers numerous benefits. Not only does it allow you to store solar energy for use when the sun isn’t shining, but it also provides several other opportunities to achieve strong financial returns. There are four main advantages to acquiring a battery for energy storage:

Frequency control

To ensure security of supply during the transition to renewable energy, new consumption patterns and an increased number of connections between countries and electricity systems, a new balancing model has been developed in the joint Nordic cooperation project Nordic Balancing Model (NBM). As the owner of a battery, balancing that enables the energy transition while being aligned with Europe’s common legislation and internal market for electricity.

There is a great opportunity for those who want to invest in storage solutions and include them in the new common frequency market called mFRR. Participants are paid according to the amount of capacity they can provide. In other words, you get paid every hour of the year for being on standby and enabling Svenska kraftnät to either withdraw or add energy to your energy storage to even out the frequency.

Electricity arbitrage

The electricity market is characterized by high hourly price differences. The difference between low load and high load can be more than ten times as much and individual hours even more. With an active battery, you can buy energy during the cheapest hours of the day and then use it during the hours when the price is highest. Or even sell off the surplus and keep the battery working all the time to maximize profitability.

Cutting power peaks

As grid companies charge higher fees depending on the power used, a battery can also help reduce grid costs. Going in and cutting the power peaks in consumption keeps the power down and thus also keeps the electricity bill down. Keeping power peaks down also helps to create a more stable electricity network.

Whatever your needs, we have a solution, offering energy storage from world-leading suppliers in all sizes, from 10 kW up to 10 MW.

Auxiliary power

For those businesses where operation is important, a battery can step in and supply the business with electricity in the event of a power cut. An additional benefit is that the PV system can continue to operate if you have registered the system as an island operation. Depending on the electricity consumption and the size of the PV system, a battery can survive the most common power cuts.

When installing a battery, it is important to know that it is designed to be optimized for one of the functions. This means that you cannot offer the battery to the frequency market at the same time as it is supposed to function as backup power.

Why does Svenska Kraftnät want more energy storage in the system?

A lucrative market has emerged for those with the right conditions to invest in energy storage, as they can receive compensation for hosting these systems on their land. But why is this so important to Svenska Kraftnät? We answer this and many other questions about energy storage in the video clips linked below.
