Battery storage facility

Are you interested in investing in a battery park? We have installed several energy storage facilities in Sweden as part of Svenska kraftnät’s investment in the frequency market. We offer advanced solutions for energy storage through modular 5 MWh containers. These units can easily be combined to build larger battery parks with capacities of 10, 20, 40 MWh, or more.

How do battery parks work?

A battery park can be compared to a huge power bank, which is activated when stabilization is needed in the power grid. These parks often consist of several containers with lithium batteries, similar to those used in electric cars. They are located near substations in order to be charged when the power system allows and discharged when demand is high. These facilities play an important role in supporting and stabilizing the local power grid, especially during periods of power shortages.

What is required to install a battery container?

Not every location is suitable for energy storage. There are several factors you should consider as a buyer before installing a battery container:

  • Network access is essential. The size of the battery requires a high-voltage subscription.
  • The energy storage units are delivered in pre-assembled containers that are placed using a crane.
  • The installation site must be able to withstand over 1,000 kg per square meter.
  • The site must be accessible to heavy trucks and crane trucks, as well as emergency services
  • Ensure that you have the necessary permits for installation. Read more about the permit process below.

How the installation process works

Installing and connecting a battery container to the power grid involves several steps. Below is a brief summary of the process.

Preliminary study
Preliminary study

The process begins with an evaluation of the electricity grid capacity to ensure that both the input and output power and the location in the aggregator pool are adequate. Based on this, we develop a preliminary system solution.

Permits & consultations
Permits & consultations

We examine the specific requirements for the project. This involves communicating with the county administrative board, the municipality, the electricity network company, the emergency services, and the insurance company to ensure that all necessary permits are in place.

Once all permits have been obtained, we place orders with suppliers, the electricity network operator, and the aggregator. We also carry out detailed planning, draw up a schedule, and inform all parties involved.

Construction part 2

Groundwork begins and preparations are made. The energy storage facility, subscriber station, and transformer station are delivered and installed. The electrical installations are then connected and tested. A final inspection is carried out to ensure that everything is correct.

Commissioning

The final step before the battery can be put into service is to test the communication system with the aggregator, which handles transactions with Svenska kraftnät. Once this is complete, the battery is ready for use on the frequency market.

Service, maintenance and warranty

Once the energy storage system is up and running, you can feel safe with Alstra Energy. With our service agreement, we provide ongoing online monitoring and make regular site visits to inspect the facility. Exactly how often depends on the surrounding environment. In order for the product warranty (five years) to apply, we carry out a documented inspection in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions at least once a year.

How much can you earn from supplying energy reserves?

Right now, it is very profitable to make your battery available to Svenska Kraftnät.

By looking at historical prices for called-off volumes, you can get an indication of how much you can earn by being active in the markets and how you can price your bids. At the same time, you should be aware that prices on the frequency market can change at any time, so you can never guarantee a specific payback period.
